MAINELY A BOOK

I spent a wonderful week in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Previous readers of my newsletter know that I go to the Maine coast once or twice a year - I love its beauty and simplicity. I had never been to Maine in April before. It was, well ..... interesting.

Maine - April 2008

The first full day I was there (a Sunday) I thought it would be nice to walk into town (there is a path down to Southwest Harbor from the condo I was staying in), have a cup of coffee and do some people watching. A couple of problems with this plan. Oh, I walked into town just fine. The dirt path was easy enough - although I DID have to navigate two rather large patches of snow left over from the many snows Maine was hit with this past winter - and I quickly made it to town. Now, where to find a cup of coffee. Nothing was open!

I found a small clothing shop that had just opened days before (most stores shut down from November until mid-April) and the store clerk suggested I walk down towards the post office. Good idea except that the small restaurant she sent me to is not open on Sundays. Finally, I stopped in the local grocery and asked about a cup of coffee. Ah - he had just made some! Yeah! One hurdle overcome.

Of course there was not place to sit in the grocery store so I took my coffee and walked about a block to a small bench. Yes! I could people watch here (although it was quite chilly - Maine is at least a month behind Pennsylvania with temperatures). Problem. Southwest Harbor has a population of less than 2,000. Unlike New Hope, PA, which is a year-round destination town, Southwest Harbor does not get a lot of visitors until the summer months.

Needless to say, it being a Sunday and only 2-3 stores open, there weren't a whole lot of people to watch. More likely, the people in the few cars and pick-ups I saw driving through town were people-watching ME - the new stranger in town!

I actually went to Maine for a specific reason though. I wanted to work on my book. Yes, I am working on a guidebook for breast cancer patients. I haven't talked about this before because I wasn't sure if I was ever going to finish it. The good news is that it is getting close to being done so I ask for your prayers that the right set of circumstances come together that I can get it published or publish it myself.

I had my entire computer system set up on the dining table in my condo and I had internet access too! It was so wonderful knowing that, if I could figure out all the details, I could actually work from Maine if I wanted to. Who knows - maybe some day this newsletter will be coming from 600 miiles north!

Lexi - April 2008Note the two photos I am including here. The landscape is the view I had from the top floor of my condo - I could barely make out a very small sliver of water.

The second photo is of Lexi before I went away (she stayed with some friends). Folks have been asking about her and I thought I would let you see for yourselves how much she has grown. She will soon be a year and 5 months and is about 14 pounds.
