A SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS

For the most part, I grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. We had a large extended family so our holidays were spent visiting relatives or having aunts, uncles, and cousins over at our house. I sure enjoyed those times but haven't had that same familial closeness as in over 30 years - mostly because my closest relative is about 300 miles away.

For whatever reason, except for church or school activities, our family was never involved in the community in which we lived.

Eight years ago, when I changed careers (left the corporate world) and started to get to know people in the New Hope / Lambertville community, little did I know that many of the people I was meeting would eventually become my new "family." This became quite evident to me a couple of weeks ago while attending the Annual New Hope Historical Society Spirited Christmas Tea, which is, essentially, a big town- wide holiday party. I had always dreamed of experiencing the magic of Christmas, like in the holiday movie White Christmas. So, singing holiday and Christmas songs in the foyer of the centuries old Parry Mansion with dozens of other New Hopians was about the closest I have gotten to that dreamed-about feeling.

So, just like George Bailey at the end of It's a Wonderful Life, when he sees all his friends around him, I feel like the wealthiest woman in town.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
